Roxby Downs

Roxby Downs is an outback town in South Australia , 563 kilometers from Adelaide . The place with around 3,600 inhabitants (as of 2016) was built as accommodation for the people employed in uranium mining at the Olympic Dam mine , which is ten kilometers to the north.

Roxby Downs was a town in Australia, which was built in cooperation with the state government and one of the largest mining companies in the world, BHP Billiton , in one of the most remote regions of Australia, complete with residential buildings and associated infrastructure (roads, water and electricity supply). In the mine, which extends over an area of 260 km², copper , uranium , gold and silver are mined.

The city has a swimming pool, a cinema, a cultural center, a shopping center, a café and sports clubs. It was officially opened on November 5, 1988, and in 2005 a local council was established. This required an Indenture Act and the place is now administered by the Roxby Downs Municipal Council .

Near Roxby Down is Andamooka , a site of the opal mines , and Woomera , approximately 30 kilometers east , and 84 kilometers south is a settlement of the Australian Defense Force , which carried out atomic bomb tests on the Woomera Prohibited Area . The 123 km² Arid Recovery protected area is located 10 kilometers north of the village .
