The Royal Barbados Police Force (abbreviation: RBPF; English for Royal Barbados Police Force ; until 1966: Barbados Police Force ) is the Barbadian police . It was founded in 1835 by the British during colonial times and has existed since the country gained independence in 1966.

history

The first law to establish a police force in Bridgetown (Bridgetown Police Bill) was passed in 1834 and shortly afterwards one for the establishment of a police force in the surrounding area. Francis Mayal Mallalieu of the Greenwich Division of the London Metropolitan Police was entrusted with the organization of the constellation . After a few changes, the legal basis for the establishment of the Barbish police in London was passed in 1835 .

The higher police officer posts were filled with police officers from England via the colonial office , while the lower ranks were filled with locals who could not be promoted to higher than sergeant major , which made recruitment difficult.

In 1889 the police band was founded. In May 1950 women were hired for the first time in the police force. Olga Mason, then one of the first female contenders, was the first female police officer to achieve the rank of inspector in 1971 . The prefix “Royal” has been an integral part of the name since a visit by the British Queen Elizabeth II in February 1966.
