The clubhouse of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club was built in the 1930s

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) is one of the oldest royal clubs in the world. It was founded on November 1, 1844 under the name Bermuda Yacht Club . The inaugural meeting with 30 people consisted of British Army officers and local sailors from Bermuda and took place during a picnic under a calabash tree in Tom Moore's Jungle (now: Hamilton Parish ).

Two years later, in 1846, a royal charter allowed the club to be renamed the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club as the 20th Royal Yacht Club in the world. Lord Mark Kerr, a British officer, went to great lengths to obtain royal approval and became the first commodore of the RBYC. The club is also the third oldest royal club outside of Britain's home waters.

During the 19th century, sailing off Bermuda mainly meant sailing in match race mode: two yachts, a winner, a loser and a huge bet on the table. With the establishment of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and committed yacht owners, match race sailing has become the modern and professional form of today. In 1906 the Bermuda Race made its debut according to the then new rules and sailing instructions of the Fleet Race . This regatta, now known as the Newport to Bermuda Race , bridges the never-ending maritime affiliation between the US east coast and Bermuda.

The RBYC organized the biennial Bermuda Race from 1906 to 1926 together with various US yacht clubs and since 1926 together with the Cruising Club of America . The club is currently hosting the Charleston Bermuda Race.

Over the past 100 years Bermuda has dispatched over 20 sailors to the modern day Olympic Games and hosted hundreds of regattas including the King Edward Argo Match Racing Gold Cup and other continental and world championships. In 2017, the 35th America's Cup took place in Bermuda in the Great Sound .

In 1933 the club moved to its current location at Albuoy's Point in Hamilton, Bermuda .
