The Royal Cork Yacht Club (German: Königlicher Yachtclub Cork) is considered to be the oldest sailing club in the world with its founding in 1720 . This title was challenged by the Neva Yacht Club from Saint Petersburg , Russia , founded in 1718, but this did not last continuously. The yacht club is now based in Crosshaven , Ireland .

history

The sailing club was founded in 1720 by William O'Brien, 4th Earl of Inchiquin with five friends as The Water Club of the Harbor of Cork . The founding legend says that his great-grandfather, as courtier of Charles II , shared the monarch's enthusiasm for sailing and brought sailing to Cork after his return to Ireland. Charles II got to know the sport of sailing in the Netherlands in the middle of the 17th century when he was in exile there. After his return to the English throne , he went sailing on the Thames with a boat he had bought from the Netherlands .

The club's first base was Hawlbowline Island in the port of Cork. In 1806 they went to Cobh when the Royal Navy claimed the island for themselves. Around this time the name changed to Cork Harbor Water Club , to be renamed Cork Harbor Yacht Club after 1820 and a little later as Cork Yacht Club . In 1831 King William IV granted the club the privilege of being able to call itself royal and the club became the Royal Cork Yacht Club . In the 1960s the company moved to its current location and merged with the Royal Munster Yacht Club .

organization

The regatta week Cork Week has been organized by the club since 1978 and takes place regularly every two years in June or July.
