action

Shoe salesman Ernest Hines and lawyer Angela Johnson get to know each other on a Tinder date in a diner. When he is about to drive her home in his Honda, the two young African-Americans who forgot to turn on the indicators while driving, are stopped by a white policeman. Ernest recognizes the danger and follows the officer's instructions to get out of the vehicle as politely as possible and also opens the trunk of his car, in which there are a large number of shoes. When the two of them still argue, Angela jumps out of the car, explains her rights to the officer and picks up the phone. The officer shoots them, and the two men get into a fight, in the course of which Ernest gets the gun in his hand and shoots the policeman.

After that they are on the run. Her first stop is her uncle Earl in New Orleans . Also when they see their faces on the TV news and front pages the next day, which makes it clear that many see them as heroes, as it turned out that the same cop killed someone two years earlier, which exonerates the two a little, The two are considered cop killers under the names Queen and Slim and are wanted across the country. Her goal is to leave the country to escape white America as Slim fears that even though he acted in self-defense, he will still be convicted. He is now wearing a burgundy-colored tracksuit, Queen a mini dress with a tiger pattern. The escape in her turquoise Pontiac leads her through the American south. The two, whom the public compares to Bonny & Clyde , have hope of escaping to Cuba and receive support from many quarters, including a black police officer who lets them go. In Florida they are last betrayed and shot by the police. Their funeral becomes a mass event in which they are now celebrated under their full names as martyrs and heroes of an uprising against the white police.

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 12, but allowed from the age of 6 if accompanied by the parents. The statement of reasons for the release states that, despite the dramatic story and the issues of racism and arbitrary police force , the film is mostly calm and episodic and focuses on the authentic character and milieu drawing. Individual scenes of violence , the sometimes rough use of language and ambivalences in the assessment of good and bad could overwhelm children under the age of 12, but since the film also emphasizes the value of humanity, children and young people from the age of 12 can understand the complexity of the events and the social context and reflect on the themes of the film.

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far convinced 82 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.4 out of a possible 10 points. In addition to the obvious comparison with Bonny & Clyde , made in the film itself , Queen & Slim has been repeatedly compared to Fruitvale Station and Blindspotting because of the black perspective from which the story is told .

Lena Waithe wrote the script

In his review, Eric Kohn of IndieWire notes that comparing Queen and Slim as "black Bonnie and Clyde" limps because Arthur Penn's outlaw saga was more of a cultural statement about sex and violence in the mass media, whereas Queen & Slim was using a similar narrative framework, examining the emotional life of a completely different group. Lena Waithes script leaves the two protagonists in a half-developed state. The coverage of the murder shows that the two are innocent and thus exonerates them, whereby their fame soon takes on a paradoxical dimension.

Peter Debruge of Variety noted, the film may be an overdue response to the suppression by law enforcement authorities ends and anchored in the constitutional structure of the white power, but recognizes the glory belongs to the Queen and Slim, which feared the censors for decades . The public could be stirred up by such representations, so Debruge.

Caryn James of the BBC's culture department says the two protagonists are admired by a community that is tired of injustice and abuse. James also sees this as a big mistake, which Melina Matsoukas makes when she shows the support they both experience, such as when the people gathered on the street carry signs shouting “Let them go!” Only to then force the police into them To let the crowd storm.

Michael Meyns from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that films always reflect the reality in which they are made, but seldom has this been as true as with Queen & Slim . You ca n't understand this road movie if you don't know how dramatic the situation is for black Americans, where millions are in jail and black people are repeatedly killed by police officers under often questionable circumstances. Queen & Slim is a political film that seldom conceals its intentions, which often seems to openly call for resistance and which thereby transfigures its heroes to an extent that appears questionable when the protagonists realize how they become symbols and legends to people who have finally done what was needed for a long time. Morally, ideologically, Queen & Slim is with all its stylistic brilliance, with all the cinematic force a film that is difficult to defend, but as an example of the inflamed reactions provoked by the deadlocked relationship between the races in America, it is one of the most important films for years Meyns: "Everyone who wants to understand America should see this film."

In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Verena Lueken certifies that the film has a “legendary potential” and says about the director Melina Matsoukas: “She stages buttery-soft and tough scenes in rhythmic succession, keeps the tension with the camera moving almost continuously, yet always finds calm and remains unsentimental , although the story is ultimately to howling. "

The film grossed $ 47.7 million worldwide. In Germany it has 70,208 visitors.
