110 cannons

The Royal Louis was a sailing warship in the French Navy . With 110 cannons, she was one of the largest warships of her time. It was named after the French King Louis XVI. which ended on the scaffold in 1793. She was shipwrecked near Brest in 1794 and sank.

history

The keel was laid in March 1779 in the Brest naval shipyard according to plans by Leon Michel Guignance. Its construction was part of an armament program in view of the conflict in America ( American War of Independence ). In the course of the French Revolution , it was renamed Républicain in September 1792 .

In 1794 she served as the flagship for the Contre Amiral Joseph Marie Nielly under Captain Pierre Mande Lebeau . In the 4th naval battle of Ushant / Ouessant she was part of the rearguard. Although she was completely de-masted and her flag was canceled, she was not raised and reached Rochefort .

On December 24th, 1794, she ran aground on the Mignant rock while leaving Brest. On December 27, the wreck was destroyed in a storm and sank.
