The The Royal Scots College ( Spanish Real Colegio de escoceses ) is founded in 1627 Scottish , Roman Catholic seminary headquartered Salamanca , Spain .

history

The Royal Scots College was founded in 1627 by Scottish priests in Madrid on behalf of the Scottish military and diplomat of the Spanish crown William Semple of Lochwinnoch and his wife Doña María de Ledesma . The Scottish Jesuit Hugo Sempilius (Hugh Sempill) was the seminary's procurator . In the deed of foundation of 1627 it was stipulated that the candidates for priesthood had to be Scottish by birth. In 1771 the opportunity arose to take over the former Jesuit seminary of San Ambrosio in Valladolid . In 1988 it was relocated to the Pontifical University of Salamanca , where higher degrees in theology and canon law were also possible. A building complex of the Marist Order was acquired and has been used as the seat of the Royal Scots College in Salamanca since 1996 . In 2014 the seminar was restructured.

The reason for the establishment of a Scottish seminary in Spain was the ban on the Catholic Church in Scotland by the Scottish Parliament in 1560. Therefore, a seminary was first founded in Tournay (later moved to Douai ) as well as in Rome , Paris and Madrid . They also found support from the Scottish Catholics in Benedictine monasteries in Regensburg and Würzburg .
