The Ruahine was a station wagon owned by the UK- based New Zealand Shipping Company that entered service in 1951. The ship, renamed Oriental Rio in 1968 , remained in service until 1974 and was then scrapped in Taiwan . The ruin was the last ship that was put into service for the New Zealand Shipping Company, which was dissolved in 1973.
history
The ruin was laid on October 24, 1949 at John Brown & Company in Clydebank and launched on December 11, 1950. After the takeover by the New Zealand Shipping Company on May 3, 1951, the ship set out on May 22, 1951 on its maiden voyage from London to Auckland .
On December 28, 1966, the ruah went into the possession of the Federal Steam Navigation Company in London, but was still managed by the New Zealand Shipping Company. The ship remained in liner service to New Zealand for almost two more years before it was sold as Oriental Rio to Nassau- based International Export Lines in September 1968 . After renovation work in Hong Kong , the Oriental Rio took service on February 16, 1969 for the Chinese Maritime Trust Ltd. and was henceforth also used for cruises .
In January 1974 the ship was decommissioned after almost 23 years of service and sold to Taiwan for scrapping. On January 15, 1974, it arrived in Kaohsiung , where it was disassembled from February 18.
