Ruangroj Mahasaranon

Ruangroj Mahasaranon ( Thai : เรือง โรจน์ มหา ศ รา นนท์ ; born March 28, 1946 in Bangkok ) is a former Thai general who was last commander in chief of the Thai armed forces between 2005 and 2006 .

Life

Ruangroj Mahasaranon attended the renowned Suankularb Wittayalai School and then graduated from the Chulachomklao Military Academy to become an officer of the Royal Army (กองทัพ บก ไทย) . He was an officer in the 1st Regiment in Bangkok and a graduate of the Army Staff School founded by Chakrabongse Bhuvanath in 1909 . He served as an employee of General Sunthorn Kongsompong , who was Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces between 1990 and 1991, and later of General Mongkon Amphornpisit , who was Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces between 1996 and 2000.

As the successor to General Chaiyasit Shinawatra , General Ruangroj Mahasaranon finally became Supreme Commander of the Thai Armed Forces on October 1, 2005 . In August 2006 he met with the ruler of Myanmar , General Than Shwe , in order to negotiate border disputes between the two countries. After the coup on September 19, 2006 , in which the incumbent Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown by General Sonthi Boonyaratglin , Thaksin tried to install General Ruangroj as interim prime minister. In fact, on September 20, 2006, he temporarily became chief advisor to the Council for Democratic Reforms of General Sonthi Boonyaratglin and held this position until September 29, 2006. On September 30, 2006 he was replaced as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces by General Boonsrang Niumpradit . After retiring from active military service, he began his political engagement in August 2007 as vice-chairman of the Thaksin Shinawatra party of people's power .

For his many years of service he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Thailand in 1992 and the White Elephant Order in 1996.
