Ruben Abgarowitsch Orbeli

Ruben Orbeli Abgarowitsch ( Armenian Ռուբեն Աբգարի Օրբելի , Russian Рубен Абгарович Орбели * January 26 jul. / 7. February  1880 greg. In Nakhchivan ; † 9. May 1943 in Moscow ) was an Armenian - Russian lawyer , university professor and founder of the Russian Underwater archeology .

Life

Orbeli's grandfather Josif Joakimowitsch (Owsep Owakomowitsch) was high priest and preacher in the cathedral in Tbilisi after training at Moscow's Lasarev seminary . Orbeli's father Abgar Josifowitsch married Princess Varvara Moissejewna Argutinska from the family of the Catholicos of all Armenians Joseph II (Ovsep Arlutjan, Prince Argutinsky-Dolgoruki) after studying law at the University of St. Petersburg . The physiologist Leon Orbeli and the orientalist and Hermitage director Joseph Orbeli were his younger brothers.

Orbeli attended the 3rd boys' high school in Tbilisi and then studied law at the University of St. Petersburg . After graduating in 1903, he stayed there to prepare for teaching at the Chair of Civil Law . 1904–1906 he worked in the Society of Masters . The Legal Society at the University of St. Petersburg accepted him as an active member and sent him to the University of Jena for further training . During this time he completed internships and took part in audits in Transcaucasia . He also worked as an author and editor in the communications of the Ministry of Finance. In 1906 he was awarded a master's degree in law from the University of St. Petersburg and a doctorate in law from the University of Jena. He then entered the service of the Civil Cassation Department of the Senate, where, in addition to his legal work, he turned to epistemology .

After the October Revolution , he and others founded the University of Tambov in 1918 , where he gave lectures on law, philosophy and ethics . After returning to Petrograd , he worked for the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In addition to the diverse organizational work, he also checked the Leningrad theaters with a view to improving working conditions.

In 1934, on the recommendation of academician AN Krylov , Orbeli became a legal advisor, member of the scientific and technical advisory board and historian of EPRON , who lifted sunken ships. From now on Orbeli dealt with underwater archeology . On his initiative and under his direct direction, the EPRON carried out 1937-1939 underwater archaeological expeditions in the Black Sea and on other coasts of the country. He developed the methodology for preserving the finds recovered from the water.

Orbeli was buried in the Moscow Armenian Cemetery .
