Ruben Drole

Ruben Drole (born 1980 in Switzerland ) is a Swiss opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

Ruben Drole was born in Switzerland to a Slovenian father and a Spanish mother. He studied with Jane Thorner Mengedoht at the University of Music and Theater in Zurich and won several singing competitions during his studies; he graduated with distinction.

In 2004 he was accepted into the Zurich International Opera Studio and in 2005 into the Zurich Opera ensemble . He was immediately entrusted with major roles as the Lucio Cinna in Johann Christian Bach's Lucio Silla , the Simone in Mozart's La Finta Semplice , the Haly in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri and Papageno in by Nikolaus Harnoncourt directed Zauberflöten -Inszenierung of Martin Kušej , who was also released on DVD by Deutsche Grammophon . In the three Da Ponte operas , staged by Sven-Eric Bechtolf and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst , Drole took on the Guglielmo , the Figaro and the Leporello . At his parent company he also sang the title role in Paisiello's Il barbiere di Siviglia , Argante in Handel's Rinaldo under William Christie and also Wurm in Verdi's Luisa Miller .

In the summer of 2006 he appeared as Haly at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence , with the Cleveland Orchestra he sang the three Da Ponte roles in concert, and in May and June 2011 he played Papageno at the Spoleto Festival USA . Shortly afterwards he made his debut as Kecal in Smetana's Bartered Bride at Styriarte in Graz, with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the podium. In February 2012 he sang and played Figaro in a production by Harald Schmidt with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra under Steven Sloane .

At Whitsun and in the summer of 2012 he took over Achilla in Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Salzburg Festival - with four countertenors, Cecilia Bartoli as Cleopatra and Giovanni Antonini at the podium. In 2013 he sang the role of the Duke of La Trémouille in a concert performance of Walter Braunfels Jeanne d'Arc - Scenes from the Life of Saint Johanna in Salzburg . At the end of 2013 / beginning of 2014 he impersonated the minister in the Fidelio production by Andreas Homoki at the Zurich Opera House.

With the Concentus Musicus Wien under Harnoncourt, Drole completed a tour of Japan with the Mozart Requiem and the Messiah , sang Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives at the Wiener Musikverein and at the Lucerne Festival , as well as Die Schöpf at the Styriarte Graz in July 2010 and in March 2014 at Theater an der Wien in concert the Leporello. He also performed the bass solos in Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Ton Koopman and in Handel's Israel in Egypt with the Concerto Köln under Emmanuelle Haïm . With the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst he made guest appearances in Cleveland, at the Lincoln Center in New York, in the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main and in the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Drole also regularly gives recitals .
