He has taught at the University of Rochester , Chicago and MIT . In 1975 he became professor for international economic relations at MIT.

He played an important role in the advancement of international economics. In 1976 he succeeded in combining the theory of purchasing power parity with the theory of interest parity to form monetary exchange rate theory . This was of great interest because some time before the Bretton Woods system , a system of almost fixed exchange rates, had broken.

His textbook on macroeconomics , written with Stanley Fischer , is considered a major work for first-year economics students.

With his countless articles in specialist journals and the international business press, he was a sought-after advisor to many central bankers and governments. In particular, he dealt with the currency crises in Latin America and Asia. He warned of “macroeconomic populism” and explained why it is so important that the foreign debt (public as well as private) does not get out of control. Dornbusch thought the euro was a bad idea.

Dornbusch succumbed to cancer at the age of 60.
