from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf von Sagan (* between 1411 and 1418; † September 18, 1454 in Konitz ) was Duke of Sagan and mercenary leader of the Teutonic Order , for whom he died in the Battle of Konitz . He came from the Glogau branch of the Silesian Piasts .

Life

Rudolf was the second-born son of Duke Johann I von Sagan and the Scholastica von Sachsen-Wittenberg (1391–1463), a daughter of Elector Rudolf III.

Like his father and brothers Balthasar and Johann II , Rudolf was a military leader of the Teutonic Order . After his father's death in 1439, he and his eldest brother Balthasar, who was also the guardian of the younger brothers Wenzel and Johann, took over the reign of the Duchy of Sagan. After the division in 1449/50, Rudolf and his brother Balthasar received the Saganer share. They also had to pledge to provide for their widowed mother and sisters' financial support. In contrast, the youngest brother Johann II received the Priebuser Land, which had only belonged to the Duchy of Sagan since 1413. He was obliged to pay for the third-born brother Wenzel, who suffered from a disability. Since they only had a modest income, Rudolf and his brothers Balthasar and Johann II had to enter foreign military service. In addition, in continuation of the policy of their father, they concluded a protective and defensive alliance with the Elector Friedrich II of Saxony in 1446 .

Brotherly quarrel over the inheritance

In 1454 Rudolf fought for the Teutonic Order in the Thirteen Years' War, which began at that time, and fell on September 18 in the Battle of Konitz . He was not married and left no offspring. It is not known where his body was buried. His Sagan share went to his older brother Balthasar . Since the youngest brother Johann II did not agree with this line of succession, there were subsequent armed conflicts between these two brothers, which led to Balthasar's death in 1472.
