Life

After graduating from high school at Ostendorf -Gymnasium in Lippstadt and completing a diploma in theology, he began studying to become a teacher at the Pedagogical Academy in Paderborn in 1960. From 1963 to 1970 he worked as a primary school teacher in Dülmen and Recklinghausen. In addition to his job in the school service, he took up studies in education, philosophy and theology again. In 1970 he did his doctorate with Klaus Schaller at the Ruhr University in Bochum, where he started working as a research assistant under Jakob Muth in 1970 . From 1976 he was an associate professor at the Pedagogical University of Bielefeld, until 1979 when he was appointed full professor to the chair for general didactics and school pedagogy at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe, Münster. In 1980 this was merged with the Institute for Educational Sciences at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . There he worked as a full professor until his retirement in 1997.

Services

During his teaching and research activities, Rudolf Biermann actively and competently participated in the establishment and development of school pedagogy at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , which involved a meaningful combination of school criticism and school theory, of didactics and teaching theory and the question of the pedagogical meaning interested in class and school. His studies on the social dimension of student and teacher action, on didactics as a process of communicative action and on the selection problem in public schools contributed in particular to this. They not only proved the mutual condition of scientific research and theory on the one hand and educational practice on the other. They were also constitutive for his understanding of school pedagogy, which claimed to promote scientifically guided, theoretically oriented school practice at a university.

Rudolf Biermann received his doctorate in 1970 at the University of Bochum with the thesis "The educational justification of the rewards and punishments in the education of Basedow, Campe and Salzmann". The dissertation was supervised by Klaus Schaller , for whose approach of a critical-communicative didactics Rudolf Biermann was able to open the entrance into the planning practice of the teachers and into the didactic discourse with his systematic analyzes of the teaching structures and case studies. The plea for a domination-free process of communication in the classroom determined Biermann's understanding of his duties as an associate professor at the Bielefeld University of Education (since 1976) and as a full professor (from 1979) at the Westphalia-Lippe University of Education, Münster (chair for general didactics and school pedagogy) and from 1980 at the Institute for Educational Sciences at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . Beyond the sphere of activity of his institute, u. a. his organizational work in the German Society for Group Work in Education (GGE) under its head Ernst Meyer . With Wilhelm Wittenbruch and Stephanie Hellekamps, he published the series “Studies on School Pedagogy” with over 38 volumes. Together with Herbert Schulte , he most recently led a project on media education in schools funded by the German Research Foundation, which was concluded in 1997 with two research reports.
