Rudolf Brändle (theologian)

Rudolf Brändle (born August 25, 1939 in Aarau ) is a Swiss Protestant Reformed theologian and was Professor of the New Testament and Old Church History at the University of Basel . His research focus is on early church history and the New Testament.

Life

After attending school in the canton of Aargau, Brändle studied Protestant theology in Basel, Göttingen and at the Sorbonne in Paris . He then worked from 1964 to 1974 as a pastor in Kilchberg BL . In 1972 he received his doctorate in Basel, after which he attended a teaching course in Israel in 1973. From 1974 to 1977 he received a habilitation grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation and then worked as pastor of the Leonhard congregation in Basel . After his habilitation in 1978, he was appointed private lecturer.

In 1985 Brändle accepted a professorship for the New Testament and Old Church History at the University of Basel and gave up his pastoral office. From 1986 to 1993 he was the central president of the Christian-Jewish Working Group and from 2000 to 2003 he was president of the concordat examining authority. In 2006 he retired.
