Rudolf Breinbauer (born April 13, 1888 in Ottensheim ; † November 13, 1973 there ) was an Austrian wood carver and boat builder .

He came from the Upper Austrian organ builder family Breinbauer in the third generation, but he is also known as a pioneer of Austrian kayak construction .

Life

Rudolf Breinbauer was the second son of Leopold Breinbauer senior (1859–1920) and Franziska Breinbauer born. Moser (1859–1950) and had six sisters. His brother Leopold Breinbauer jun. (1886–1920) was a trained musician, Rudolf was the artist of the Breinbauer family. He was supposed to take over the artistic design and the sculpting work and therefore attended the State Trade School (for fine arts) in Goethestrasse in Linz, then the Sculpture School in Hallstatt . Then he went on a hike to Mecklenburg , where he was able to perfect his knowledge with well-known sculptors.

After completing his apprenticeship, he worked as a sculptor in his parents' business and also took on external contracts. Many organs were artistically designed and decorated by him. He also decorated many altars with sculptures. In the Ottensheim parish church , he designed statues and reliefs on the side altars and the pulpit. In the spa hall of Bad Hall you can still see a life-size statue of Duke Tassilo III. visit. His style is rooted in the neo-Gothic , like the Breinbauer organs of that time.

In 1914 Leopold jun. and Rudolf drafted into military service on the southern front . Towards the end of the war both came into Italian captivity. They were not released until 1919. After 15 months of absence and 11 months of imprisonment in Italy, Rudolf came back to Ottensheim on October 6, 1919. Brother Leopold returned weak and sick and died in January 1920, and in April of the same year his father too.

At first Rudolf Breinbauer tried to run the company on his own, carried out remaining work, but in 1921 handed over the business to the Wilhelm Zika organ building company . He briefly tried his hand as a cabinet maker, but then specialized in the construction of sports boats, especially kayaks, and was able to record international success.

On October 3, 1922, he married Paula Eidlhuber (daughter of the Ottensheim host family Riener-Eidlhuber) in the church on Pöstlingberg . From this marriage there were two children, Walter (* December 24, 1924) and Margareta (* July 28, 1930). Son Walter was drafted into military service after graduating from high school. He served as a lieutenant in the infantry on the Western Front and died in Luxembourg on February 25, 1945 at the end of World War II . He is buried at the Sandweiler military cemetery.

In the years after 1945, Rudolf Breinbauer was also a local councilor. In 1961 he closed the boat building company for reasons of age and died in 1973 in Ottensheim.

Rudolf began building watercraft as early as 1907. He undertook his first excursion in a self-constructed kayak on June 12, 1913. In many publications he is referred to as the “pioneer of Austrian kayak construction”. He specialized in building kayaks and row boats, but also made some motor and sailing boats. At the 1936 Olympics , Kainz / Dorfner won the gold medal in a two-person kayak (1000 m) on a Breinbauer kayak , the first ever to be awarded in this discipline . With his successful model Elfi II , Edi Hans Pawlata from Vienna is said to be the first Central European to "capsize and straighten" (the Eskimo roll ). Its quality was not only appreciated in Austria, it also delivered boats to Germany, Hungary, CSSR and even Argentina, among others.

The boat builder Rud. Breinbauer left over 1000 boats in the years 1922–61. Due to the lack of a successor, the boat builder workshop was closed in 1961.
