Rudolf Engelmann

Friedrich Wilhelm Rudolf Engelmann (born June 1, 1841 in Leipzig ; † March 28, 1888 there ) was a German astronomer and publisher .

Life

Engelmann was born in Leipzig in 1841 as the son of the publisher Wilhelm Engelmann . He attended the Thomas School in Leipzig . He studied astronomy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Universität Leipzig . He became an assistant to Karl Christian Bruhns and in 1863 an observator at the Leipzig observatory . In 1864 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and completed his habilitation in 1871. He then worked as a private lecturer in Leipzig. In 1874 he became an authorized signatory , in 1876 a partner and in 1878 the owner of his father's bookstore. In 1880 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

The physiologist, biologist and zoologist Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann (1843–1909) was his younger brother.
