Rudolf Geyer (orientalist)

Rudolf Eugen Geyer (born June 28, 1861 in Vienna ; † September 15, 1929 there ) was an Austrian orientalist .

From 1879 he studied classical and Indian philology. The Semitist David Heinrich Müller won him over for Semitic Studies , through which he turned to Arabic Studies . In 1884 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

He first worked at the Imperial and Royal Court Library . At the University of Vienna he became a private lecturer in Arabic language and literature in 1900, an associate professor in 1906 and, as Müller's successor, a full professor of Semitic studies and head of the Oriental Institute. He researched ancient Arabic poetry , ancient North Arabic vocabulary and the phraseology of the Bedouin poets . Geyer was a member of the anti-Semitic professors' clique Bärenhöhle . He was buried at the Döblinger Friedhof .
