Rudolf Matthias Pichler (born September 17, 1874 in Urfahr , Upper Austria, † November 25, 1950 in Vienna ) was an Austrian technician, monument conservator and painter.

Life

Pichler initially attended the Leitner drawing school in Linz before continuing his studies at the Technical University in Vienna and at the E. Zetsche painting school in Vienna. During his studies he became a member of KaV Norica Wien in 1893 . In 1898 he started working for the Lower Austrian Lieutenancy, where he was partly involved in restoration work. In 1902 he became an engineer and a corresponding member of the kk Central Commission for Research and Conservation of Art and Historical Monuments . From 1909 he worked in the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Public Works , from 1918 in the building construction department of the Ministry of Commerce as a senior engineer. In 1919 he became a senior building officer and in 1920 he became a ministerial advisor before retiring in 1923.

As a painter, Pichler created numerous topographically accurate landscapes and architectural depictions. From 1922 he was a board member of the Dürerbund . His pictures showed in exhibitions of the Segantini and Dürerbund.

The importance of Pichler lies in the combination of technology and monument protection. As a monument conservator, for example, he was involved in all construction negotiations on the Danube bank railway through the Wachau on behalf of Archduke Franz Ferdinand . So he wrote in 1911:

“Up until a few years ago, the Wachau, this wonderful cultural area, was a secluded corner of the earth, hardly known to most by name. This has now changed. Hoping for economic advantages, the population strives to be in close contact with the world around them. The longed-for rail line now leads through the entire Wachau and beyond; Shipping traffic has also become livelier. While only a few, mostly artists, knew how to appreciate the charms of the Wachau and enjoyed the quiet seclusion there, thousands now visit this area. The vigorous action to raise the Wachau is already beginning to bear its fruits, fruits that the still viable tree of old culture would throw off and wither if this tree was shaken in its mark of life. May this reference to the direct connection between economic advantage and possession of inherited goods from past cultural periods help ensure that the latter is not carelessly abandoned and preserved.
