Rudolf Niggeler
Rudolf Niggeler (born December 1, 1845 in Bern ; † July 12, 1887 there ; entitled to live in Grossaffoltern ) was a Swiss judge , politician and poet .
life and work
Niggeler was the son of the farmer, legal agent and community clerk Niklaus (1817–1872) and Bertha, née Snell. His grandfather was Wilhelm Snell .
Niggeler attended the canton school in Bern and the grammar school in Pruntrut . There he met the American-Swiss Auguste Luise Julia Wyser, whom he married in 1871. In Pruntrut he began to write poetry. These were later published in a volume of poetry and taught in schools in Bern.
From 1864 to 1870 Niggeler studied law at the University of Bern and at the University of Giessen . He completed his studies in Bern in 1870 with a state examination and received the Haller Medal .
When his father died in 1872, Niggeler continued his father’s legal practice. From 1875 to 1879 he was a judge at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court . As a politician he was active as a liberal in the Bernese Grand Council from 1879 to 1886, as a national councilor from 1879 to 1887. In 1883 Niggeler received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich .
