Rudolf Oldenbourg (art historian)

Rudolf Oldenbourg (born May 8, 1887 in Munich , † June 12, 1921 in Badenweiler ) was a German art historian .

Life

Rudolf Oldenbourg was the son of the publisher Hans Oldenbourg (1849–1922) ( R. Oldenbourg Verlag ). He attended the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich and passed his Abitur in 1906, then studied art history in Halle and Vienna and received his doctorate in Halle in 1911 with Adolph Goldschmidt with a work on the work of the painter Thomas de Keyser . In 1913 he became an assistant at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich under Hugo von Tschudi and completed his habilitation in 1919 at the Technical University of Munich . In Munich he also worked as an art critic for the Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten . At the end of 1919 he became assistant director at the Gemäldegalerie in the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum in Berlin. He died after frequent illnesses at the age of only 34.

His specialty was the Flemish painting of the 17th century, especially Peter Paul Rubens .
