Rudolf Rieger (born January 5, 1916 in Brunn am Gebirge , † March 13, 1996 in Hall ) is a former Austrian skier whose focus, however, was largely on ski jumping .

Career

Rieger grew up in Semmering and also started ski jumping at the Austrian winter sports club there. He competed for the first time in the 1930s. In 1934 he won the regional championships in Vienna and Lower Austria on the local Lichtensteinschanze . As a result, Rieger also tried his hand at alpine ski racer and cross-country skier, but was unable to convince and therefore stayed at ski jumping. After further successes in 1934 and 1935, he was part of the Austrian team for the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In jumping from the normal hill he reached the 26th place with jumps of 68 m and 67.5 m. In the international jumping competition on the Bloudkova Velikanka in Planica , he came third behind Sepp Bradl and Gregor Höll . At the 1937 World Championships in Chamonix , which took place a year later , he reached eleventh place. After this success he was nominated for a starting place in the Nordland tour and jumped to 21st place as the second best Central European. In 1938 he won in Kitzbuhel the jump to the Silver Gams . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1938 , he jumped from the normal hill to 57.5 and 56.5 m and thus only achieved a weak 75th place. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich, Rieger lost his place in the national team due to the strong competition from the German jumpers.

During the Second World War , Rieger married his partner Maria and had two children with her in 1944 and 1945. However, only the younger of the two survived. After the war he lived in Eisenerz , where he returned to his trained locksmith trade. In skiing he was later active again as a consultant to Reinhold Bachler .
