Rudolf Schenkel

Rudolf leg (* 21st January 1770 in Düren , † 19th February 1847 ) was a German Wholesale - businessman and benefactor of the city Düren. He was married to Catharina Schenkel geb. Schoeller.

As a wholesaler, Schenkel had a considerable fortune from inheritance and his own earnings. He inherited the Weyerhof , a former state domain , from his father . The Jesuitenhof , an estate , was also owned by Rudolf Schenkel. In 1821 he bought the Fronhof in Disternich .

Schenkel was a member of the Düren city ​​council for decades .

In 1825 Rudolf Schenkel donated the land for the Protestant cemetery on Kölnstrasse to the Reformed and Lutheran congregations . He also bore the cost of piercing the Düren city wall from Schellengasse (today Wilhelmstrasse ) to the outer promenade (today Schenkelstrasse ).

When a poor food establishment was to be set up in Düren through private donations, Schenkel donated the Jesuit building in Jesuitengasse to accommodate them. Later, the Elisabeth Institute for the Blind of the Rhine Province was set up here.
