Rudolf Suter (Germanist)
Rudolf Suter-Christ (born February 3, 1920 in Brugg ; † April 17, 2011 in Basel ; legal resident in Basel) was a Swiss Germanist and journalist .
Life
Suter graduated from the humanistic grammar school in Basel. He studied German, history and Latin philology and received his doctorate from the University of Basel on early Basel dialect poetry . From 1945 to 1950 he worked as an assistant teacher, then as a journalist, first for the radio and from 1956 as editor of the Basler Nachrichten . From 1972 to 1977 he was a lecturer at the engineering school in Basel and vice-president of the cantonal homeland security commission (now cityscape commission). From 1978 he was editor of the Christoph-Merian-Verlag .
Commissioned by the Christoph Merian Foundation , he wrote in 1976 - following the example of Albert Weber Zurich German grammar - a basel German grammar and 1984 basel German dictionary. These two basic works, which met with widespread recognition, gave him the reputation of being the Basel “dialect pope”.
Suter owned a large part of the estate of his great-grandfather Jonas Breitenstein , which he donated to the Liestal Poet and City Museum .
