history

In the second half of the 19th century from the suburbs in 1864 experienced Reinsdorf , Rustendorf and Braunhirschen community founded Rudolfsheim by 1859. Commissioning of the Western Railway brisk construction activity, as the servants of the railway in the station needed homes. Businesspeople also take advantage of the easier procurement of raw materials due to the proximity to the railways by settling in the area concerned.

For this reason, the then Vienna Prince Archbishop Cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher vehemently advocated the establishment of a new parish and donated 12,000 guilders from his private assets to purchase a plot of land on which the associated parish church was to be built. In 1892 Rudolfheim was incorporated into Vienna and the building site acquired in the meantime at what is now Kardinal Rauscher-Platz was expanded by the City of Vienna by transferring a street site.

On September 27, 1893, in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and with the strong participation of the population, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the Rudolfsheim Church took place, which was completed in 1898 to the point where services could be celebrated. Since the available money was only enough for the construction of the church, it could only be poorly equipped at first. For this reason, a solemn consecration could not yet take place. The church was first designated on December 29, 1898 by city dean Konstantin Walter, before the consecration was carried out on November 21, 1899 by Prince Archbishop Cardinal Anton Josef Gruscha .

On March 31, 2016, the parish area was expanded to include the area of the repealed parish of St. Anthony of Padua .

The Rudolfsheimer parish church is like many other churches built in the second half of the 19th century a neo-Gothic brick building. The design comes from the later chief building officer Karl Schaden . The tower clock was commissioned by the City of Vienna and was equipped with electrical lighting as early as 1904. The pulpit , baptismal font , confessionals and pews were designed by the interior designer Eduard Zotter . The three-part high altar painting was made by the academic painter Josef Reich. It shows Mary as Queen of the Martyrs enthroned on a marble seat in the center of the picture. To her right stands St. Peter , next to him St. Archmartyr Stephen , the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Vienna . To the left of the "Regina Martyrum" (Queen of the Martyrs) three female figures can be seen, a personification of faith (Fides), hope (Spes) and love (Caritas).
