Rudolf Katscher
Rudolf Katscher (born April 17, 1904 in Vienna as Rudolf Kacser; † June 8, 1994 in London ) was an Austrian screenwriter , film and television director .
He studied architecture at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and then worked as a journalist for the Neue Wiener Tagblatt . From 1928 he wrote screenplays for German film and settled in Berlin . He specialized in crime films and co-wrote the screenplay for the Edgar Wallace film Der Zinker .
After the National Socialists came to power, Katscher returned to Austria and directed several films there. In 1935 he emigrated to London and called himself Rudolf Cartier / Carter . He worked for the BBC for the first time in the late 1930s (including the television drama Rehearsal for a Drama , BBC 1939), but the war initially interrupted his work. His television play The Dead Eye was even stopped in the production phase. In addition to smaller scripts, he initially acted as a source of ideas, for example for The Man from Morocco (1944). In 1952 he got another job with the BBC , where he staged and produced plays for television. He later became one of eight chief directors of British television and, as such, directed the Maigret series with Rupert Davies . Through his adaptations of mostly continental European theater dramas and original television productions, which he created together with Nigel Kneale, such as Quatermass and Quatermass II, he made a name for himself beyond Great Britain as a television pioneer. Later he also worked in his home town of Vienna for ORF and on behalf of ARD .
