Ruedi Lais

Ruedi Lais (born October 27, 1953 ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ).

In 1977 Ruedi Lais printed leaflets in Wallisellen "against the disfigurement of nature" in the form of a development in the Hörnligraben local recreation area. He found a majority at the community meeting and, like everyone who stood up for environmental issues back then, became a party member of the SP. In 1994 he became a local councilor, then social director. Together with neighboring communities, he built up the decentralized drug aid in Glatttal. He campaigned for the establishment of the Glattal transport company (VBG) , of which he is the only private shareholder - along with 22 public shareholders. He has been a Cantonal Councilor in Zurich since 2000 and headed the social democratic parliamentary group from 2005 to 2008. He is considered a prominent politician in the areas of transport policy and environmental protection as well as in connection with questions about the constitution and structure of the state. He has been a member of the Bülach District Council since 2013 . His successes include the successful referendums against the privatization of the water supply and against a cut in the transport fund. In 2021, the canton of Zurich will vote on the transparency initiative that he has formulated.

Life

Ruedi Lai's grandfather was a local councilor and school caretaker for the Democrats , who was also Lai's father, who became a local councilor in 1970 and later joined the FDP. The father was an engineer with the SBB , the parents “puritanically reformed middle class” says Lais. And: "I developed similarly rigid moral concepts as my father, only in the opposite direction." Lais studied geography and became a systems engineer at IBM until he turned entirely to politics in 2004. In his spare time, Lais indulges in orienteering , devotes himself to botany and owns more than 200 rare wild plants as well as a herbarium with over 2500 herbarium specimens. And he is interested in languages: He speaks English , French , Italian and Portuguese and has a weakness for etymology .

Lais lives with his partner in Wallisellen, is divorced and has two children (* 1982 and 1984). In 2020 Lais contracted pancreatic cancer , a disease from which his mother had died, and underwent an operation.
