'Rufete' is an important autochthonous red wine variety from Portugal .
distribution
Traditional growing areas are the Douro Valley, but also areas in the Beira region (especially near Castelo Rodrigo , Cova da Beira and Pinhel ). In 2004 the area under vines in Portugal was around 5,500 hectares . In Spain , only 690 hectares were registered mainly in the Castilla-Leon region.
The global cultivation area in 2010 was 4833 ha.
Ampelographic features
The tip of the shoot is bordered green-white, woolly and carmine-red. The leaf is medium-sized, three- to five-lobed, cupped, wavy and unevenly serrated. The grape is medium-sized with round, black-blue and fragrant berries. The berries have a firm skin, are very juicy and have an aromatic taste. The growth is medium strong.

properties
The early ripening variety produces rather light, simple and fruity red wines . It is one of the permitted varieties for the development of port wine .
