The Rugby-Verband Bayern e. V. (RVBY) is the Bavarian rugby sports association founded in 1996 and based in Munich . It is one of the 13 regional associations of the German Rugby Association (DRV) and a member of the Bavarian State Sports Association .

Although one of the youngest regional associations in German rugby, the RVBY has seen great growth in the years since it was founded and now comprises 33 clubs (as of January 1, 2019). This makes the RVBY, ahead of the Rugby Association NRW (22 clubs), the state association with the most rugby clubs in Germany .

history

The history of rugby in Bavaria goes back to the 19th century. There is evidence that even before 1898 rugby football, as the sport was called back then, was played in Munich “in the local men's gymnastics club”.

The rest of the story lies in the darkness of the past. However, it is known that in the twenties, FC Bayern Munich, among others, had a rugby department that prevailed 3-0 against the Heidelberger Ruder Club 28 in 1928. There is also evidence of teams from FC Wacker Munich and DSV Munich in 1929

After the Second World War , rugby in Bavaria was only played by army teams from the various US Army bases. This only changed in 1977 when the Munich RFC was founded as the first civil society. In 1985 TuS Fürstenfeldbruck followed.

On August 23, 2013 it became known that the Bavarian Rugby Association had achieved a real coup. With Robin Stalker, the RVBY was able to win the former CFO of the sports equipment supplier Adidas as patron. For the New Zealander, "rugby is simply a way of life" - and together with the Bavarian clubs, he wants to present it more to the public in the future.

In 2015, the RVBy entered into a close cooperation with the Bavarian Lawn Power Sport and Tug of War Association. The goal is u. a. To leverage synergies for mutual benefit.

Trivia

The Munich Rugby Football Club was the only participant in the 1st Bundesliga from Bavaria in the 2000/01 and 2002/03 seasons.

Unterföhring in the district of Munich, with just under 11,000 inhabitants, is the smallest independent municipality in Germany with its own rugby club. The Rugby Club Unterföhring e. V. was founded there in 2012. With its promotion to the second division, Unterföhring is the only municipality in Germany that has ever placed a rugby club in a Bundesliga.

Illesheim Black 'n' Blue is the last remaining club with headquarters in a US Army base.
