The Hamburg Rugby Association ( HHRV for short ) is the umbrella organization for rugby clubs in and around Hamburg . The HHRV is a professional association in the Hamburger Sportbund and a regional association in the German Rugby Association (DRV).

history

Turn of the century until 1925

When in the second half of the 19th century the enthusiasm for the English soccer game slowly took hold of the German youth, the first pioneers turned to soccer according to the rules of the rugby school in many cities (e.g. Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Hanover) to. In the Hanseatic city, too, the roots of rugby go back to the 19th century. The first rugby activities in Hamburg from the eighties of the 19th century are guaranteed. And these games were continued at the beginning of the 20th century. The Hamburg rugby club at the time received FC 1897 Hannover in 1913 (3:11). The Hamburger SV (since 1925) and the SV Police (1924 to 2005) were the first long-term active clubs, some of which are still active today.

The time up to the Second World War

So it was not until the 1935/1936 season that a regional championship was held for the first time. Numerous clubs from Hamburg, but also from other northern German cities such as Wilhelmshaven, Lüneburg and Kiel competed for the then "Nordmarkmeisterschaft". The first title holder was the team of the Kriegsmarine Kiel. Hamburg's record champions are, however, the rugby team of FC St. Pauli, founded in 1933, with a total of 33 titles in the period from 1937 to 1996.

1945 to the 1960s - the founding years

The restart after the World War was difficult, but it went so well - also with the help of intensive game traffic with teams from the British occupation troops - that the Hamburg Rugby Association was founded in 1952. Until then, rugby was organized as a special division of the Hamburg Football Association . The founding members included numerous clubs from the Hamburg sports scene: FC St. Pauli , Hamburger Rugby Club , HSV , SV Polizei Hamburg , ASK, Eimsbütteler TV , Altona 93 , SV St. Georg , Fichte Langenhorn , Uhlenhorster Hockey Club .

Since the 1970s - foundation of the Bundesliga

With the introduction of the Rugby Bundesliga in 1971 with the founding member FC St. Pauli, a series of structural reforms began in German rugby, in the course of which Hamburg rugby lost its first class. Hamburg clubs were only able to hold their own in the first division for a short time: FC St. Pauli (1971 to 1975 and 1988 to 1990), SV Polizei (1972/73), HSV (1978/79). National titles could not be won with the exception of the league cup wins of FC St. Pauli (1991 and 2002). After the latest league reform, FC St. Pauli and the Hamburg rugby club have been playing in the 1st Bundesliga (North) since the 2012/13 season. The Hamburg women's rugby has also developed successfully. The women's team of FC St. Pauli, founded in 1989, won eight championship titles between 1995 and 2012 alone. More than 20 national players have emerged from this team. The club has also established a U16 girls' team. With the FC St. Pauli (around 600 members), the HHRV is home to the largest rugby club in Germany.

Another milestone in 2006: the HHRV took over the sole rights of use for the rugby arena Stadtpark from the city of Hamburg. Under the umbrella of the Hamburg Rugby Association, it organizes the sporting and administrative processes in the rugby arena Saarlandstrasse in Hamburg's city park together with its affiliated clubs . After further negotiations with the city of Hamburg, the HHRV can offer its clubs the Barmwisch rugby pitch in Hamburg-Bramfeld and the “Am Bären” training pitch on the Südring in Hamburg's city park.

After more than 44 years, the Hamburg Rugby Association organized the international match between Germany and Sweden on April 6, 2013 and submitted a successful application for future rugby international matches in front of more than 3500 spectators. In the same year there was an international youth meeting in Israel between the U18 selection of the HHRV and the Kibbutz Yizre'el Rugby Club, which the Hamburg Senate had financially supported. The Hamburg Senate also supported the visits of the Israeli association with its men's and youth team to the Hanseatic city in 2005, 2008 and 2012.
