Rugby is a city in North Dakota with 2939 inhabitants (2000) covering an area of 586.9 square kilometers. Rugby is the county seat of Pierce County .
The city has been considered the geographic center of North America since 1931 .
history
Rugby was founded in 1886 on the junction of a railway line. Here an important branch line turned off to Bottineau . The city got its name after a place at a railroad crossing in Warwickshire in England , the place at this English crossing was also called Rugby. The name given by the Great Northern Railway was deliberately chosen and was intended primarily to motivate English settlers to settle here. However, there is evidence that four fifths of the first inhabitants were Germans and Scandinavians .
In 1931 a four and a half meter high obelisk was erected to mark the geographic center of North America. In 1971 the obelisk was re-erected at a different location after new measurements. But it is still controversial to this day whether the place can be called the geographic center of North America. The last measurements assume that the geographic center is about 25 kilometers from the city.
