Rupite ( Bulgarian Рупите ) is a village in the municipality of Petritsch , in Blagoevgrad Oblast in what is now southwestern Bulgaria . Rupite belongs to the geographical region of Macedonia and lies at an altitude of 147 meters above sea level. The administrative seat of Petritsch is located about six kilometers southwest of the village. The Struma River flows about three kilometers east of the village .
In the vicinity of the place there is a thermal and healing spring (spring temperature approx. 75 ° C). Baba Wanga , a well-known seer, lived in Rupite. The main sources of income are agriculture and regional and, for some years, pilgrimage tourism.
history
Rupite was called Schirbanowo (Ширбаново) until 1951. The village is also mentioned in 1876 under the name Shirban (Ширбан). Alternative names are also Scharbanovo or Sirbanowo. In 1951 the place was renamed and was called Muletarowo until 1993. In 1994 the Church of St. Petka (храм Св. Петка) was consecrated in honor of the famous seer Baba Wanga . Since 2008, the place has given its name to the Rupite Glacier on Smith Island in Antarctica.
