Ruprecht von Eggenberg
Ruprecht von Eggenberg (* 1546 ; † February 7, 1611 in Graz , Styria ) was an Austrian general from the Eggenberg family .
Life
In 1543, Count Georg von Schaunberg had to sell the Ehrenhausen Palace including the Meierhof to Christoph von Eggenberg († 1553) from the Radkersburg line of the Eggenberg family. Ruprecht von Eggenberg was a son of the aforementioned Christoph von Eggenberg and Helene von Fieger. Ruprecht von Eggenberg was thus a great-grandson of that Hans Eggenberger, who died in 1481, whose grave monument can be seen in the parish church of Bad Radkersburg , a brother of that Bartholomäus von Eggenberg, whose epitaph is in the parish church of Ehrenhausen, and a cousin of that Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg , who the Eggenberg Castle near Graz (now in the XIV. district - Eggenberg) built.
Ruprecht von Eggenberg decided early on to pursue a military career. In 1572 he entered Spanish service as a captain and served in the Netherlands under the great general Alexander Farnese , Duke of Parma and Piacenza . Eggenberg was able to gain a lot of experience here. Archduke Karl II appointed Ruprecht von Eggenberg to the archducal council and captain of the main palace in Graz . Because of the growing Turkish threat, he was used as a troop leader from 1592.
On June 22, 1593, Habsburg troops under the three commanders Ruprecht von Eggenberg, Andreas von Auersperg and Toma Erdődy defeated a Turkish overwhelming power under Telli Hassan Pascha in the Battle of Sissek and liberated the besieged fortress Sisak . In 1594 Eggenberg received command of the Austrian troops on the border with Croatia and in 1595 captured the Turkish fortress of Petrinia . For field colonel in Upper Hungary Eggenberg was appointed in 1596 and 1597, the appointment was made to General Field-Obrist Feldzeugmeister . Because of his merits, Ruprecht von Eggenberg was finally raised to the baron status by the Emperor in 1598 with the entire House of Eggenberg . He quit his job in 1606 and retired to Graz, where he died in 1611. Ruprecht von Eggenberg's achievements formed an essential cornerstone for the family's further rise.
In his will from 1609 Ruprecht von Eggenberg had stipulated that he should be buried in the mausoleum to be built for him on the Schlossberg in Ehrenhausen . According to his last will, he was then buried in the mausoleum, inaugurated in 1693. His nephew and heir Wolf von Eggenberg (1580–1615), Colonel General on the Croatian border and son of Bartholomäus von Eggenberg and Justine von Breuner , was also buried there.
