Russell Hall

Russell Hall (* around 1995) is a Jamaican jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , composition ) of modern jazz .

Life

Hall, who is from Kingston, Jamaica , began playing the double bass at the age of 14 when he was invited to Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he was tutored by Christopher Dorsey and he played at the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble with the he won the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Competition in 2011 and the following year . Hall gained national recognition in 2012 as a member of the Jazz Band of America , the Vail Jazz Workshop and a finalist in the Young Arts and Grammy Jazz Ensemble . In 2013 he was part of the Emmy- nominated film HBO: Masterclass with Wynton Marsalis . He then studied at the Juilliard School in New York City with Ron Carter , Wynton Marsalis and Ben Wolfe . In New York he has since played with musicians such as Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Kathleen Battle , Wayne Shorter , Roy Haynes , Heath Brothers , Barry Harris , Jon Batiste and with Mwenso and the Shakes . First recordings were made with Whitney Marchelle ( Dig Dis ).

In the following years Hall u. a. with Joey Alexander ( My Favorite Thing ), Herlin Riley ( New Direction ), Allan Harris ( Nobody's Gonna Love You Better ) and in the trio by Emmet Cohen ( Dirty in Detroit , with Kyle Poole ). In his current (2019) band project The Enigmatics , which interprets the music of Thelonious Monk , Lester Young , Willie The Lion Smith and Dizzy Gillespie , Ruben Fox (tenor saxophone), Sean Mason (piano) and Evan Sherman (drums) play. In the field of jazz, Tom Lord recorded six recording sessions in which Hall was involved between 2014 and 2017.
