Russell P. Sebold (born August 20, 1928 in Dayton , Ohio , † April 7, 2014 in West Chester , Pennsylvania ) was an American Romance philologist and Hispanist .

life and work

Sebold studied at Indiana University Bloomington and at Princeton University with Américo Castro (Master's degree 1951). In Princeton he received his doctorate in 1953 with the thesis José Francisco de Isla. Jesuit satirist of pulpiteers in eighteenth-century Spain . He taught at Duke University (1955 to 1956), at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1956 to 1966) and as a full professor at the University of Maryland, College Park (1966 to 1968). From 1968 to 1998 he was Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Editor of the Hispanic Review . He occupied the Edwin B. and Leonore R. Williams Chair for Romance Languages. Sebold was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española (1993) and the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (1993) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Alicante (1984), to which he bequeathed his library.
