August von Krempelhuber (born September 14, 1813 in Munich ; † October 2, 1882 there ) was a German botanist who was particularly concerned with lichens ( lichenology ). Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Kremp. "

Life

He came from the noble Munich Krempelhuber family . August von Krempelhuber graduated from (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1832 . He then studied forest science at the University of Munich . Afterwards he was a district forester in Mittenwald and from 1855 district forest council in Munich.

He collected lichens all over Europe (and also mosses during his time in Mittenwald) and studied their systematics. From 1861 he published the lichen flora of Bavaria. Later he dealt more with tropical species. His collection of 20,000 copies was bought by the University of Munich and is now part of the Botanical State Collection in Munich. He was an honorary doctor from the University of Munich.

He wrote a three-volume history of lichenology up to around 1870. In 1876 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Krempelhuber spoke Greek, Latin, English, French, Italian and Swedish.

In Lerchenau , Krempelhuberplatz is named in honor of August von Krempelhuber.
