The Russenstein is a historical stone cross in Großkugel in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The stone is located on the outskirts of Großkugel on a small green area at the southern end of Neue Straße where it joins the street An der B 6 , which leads from Halle (Saale) to Leipzig .

nature

The stone cross, originally shaped as a parallel-edged Latin cross, has a height of 77 centimeters , a width of 39 and a thickness of 27 centimeters. The arms of the cross are no longer there and were probably cut off a long time ago. The beginnings of the cross arms can only be guessed at. Significant signs of weathering can be seen on the cross and especially on the head of the cross.

history

The cross dates from the 15th century and is made of sandstone . It was probably originally located further south, on the south side of the main road from Halle to Leipzig. The corridor at the Chausseehaus there belongs to the Röglitz district and is called Die Kreuzhalben Hufen . The name should go back to the stone cross. The origin of the name Russenstein for the stone cross is unclear. There is a story that tells of Russians who were buried here and who died in the war .

A document mentioning the cross comes from the year 1558. In a contract between the Archbishop of Magdeburg and the Elector of Saxony , the guiding between Leipzig and Halle is regulated. The elector was entitled to escort from Leipzig via Schkeuditz to the crucifix south of the village of Großkugel. From then on the Magdeburg escort began. It can be assumed that at this time there was a wayside shrine with a crucifix next to the stone cross . A report by the local history researcher Siegmar von Schultze-Galléras , who locates the cross on the boundary between Großkugel and Schkeuditz, is inadvertently incorrect.
