The rods cos ( Lactuca viminea ) is a plant from the genus lettuce ( Lactuca ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

description

The tail lettuce is a two-year-old, possibly evergreen hemicryptophyte . This half-rosette plant forms a turnip . The species grows to heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The stem is yellowish white and pithy. It has rod-shaped, upright branches. The leaves are coarse and sagging. The lower ones are pinnate, the upper ones undivided and linear. The heads are five-flowered.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

The achenes are beaked and have a pappus with feathered, pure white hair.
The fruiting bodies of the achenes are compressed flat.

Occurrence

The rod lettuce is found in Europe, the Canary Islands, North Africa, West Asia, Turkmenistan and the Caucasus. The species grows on dry rock corridors, in patchy dry grasslands and in dry shrubbery fringes. It grows in societies of the order Agropyretalia, but also of the Festuco-Brometea class or the Geranion sanguinei association. The species is now extinct in Germany. It used to occur in Saxony on the Elbe and, as an unstable neophyte, possibly also in Saxony-Anhalt.
