Ruth Berktold

Ruth Berktold (born July 28, 1967 in Kaufbeuren ) is a German architect and professor at the Munich University of Applied Sciences . Berktold is the founder of yes architecture .

Life

Berktold studied architecture and urban design / planning at the University of Stuttgart and in the master class of Peter Cook and Enric Miralles at the Städelschule in Frankfurt (1986–1993). After studying in Germany, she lived and worked in New York for nine years. There she completed her Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University with distinction (1995) and worked for various architecture firms, including a. with Bernard Tschumi , Polshek Partnership and Asymptote . During this time Berktold also began teaching. She ran a master’s office with the Canadian architect Lise Anne Couture at the Parsons School of Design in New York and in 1999 accepted her first professorship for architectural design at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . From 2005 to 2008 she taught as a visiting professor at the NTNU Trondheim.

In 2002 Berktold founded the architecture office YES architecture with branches in Munich and New York. Since 2003 she has also been Professor of CAx and Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and since January 2017 visiting professor at the "Bernard & Anne Spitzer School of Architecture".

Projects

Berktold carried out over 300 projects in different countries with her architecture office. The works are mostly interdisciplinary and deal with different digital design and production methods. The projects include offices, hotels, museums, shopping centers, stadiums and other public facilities.

In 2004 Berktold and her colleague Marion Wicher won the international competition for the Bonn congress center of the United Nations .
