Enric Miralles
Enric Miralles i Moya (born February 12, 1955 in Barcelona ; † July 3, 2000 in Sant Feliu de Codines near Barcelona) was a Spanish architect.
Life
In 1978 he graduated from the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura (ETSAB) in Barcelona . From 1973 to 1978 he worked in the architecture office of Albert Viaplana and Helio Piñón and was there - among other things - involved in the Plaça dels Països Catalans , the forecourt for the Estación Sants . After winning several architecture competitions, he founded his own office in Barcelona with his partner Carme Pinós in 1984 , which they ran together until 1991. Within the up-and-coming Spanish architecture scene of the late 80s, the unusual buildings also attracted international attention. Numerous orders resulted from competitions won at home and abroad, including in Germany. After the separation, Miralles and Pinós continued to work in their own offices.
Since 1993 Enric Miralles' office has been operating under the name "EMBT Architects" with his new partner, the Italian architect Benedetta Tagliabue. She continues to run the office under this name after his untimely death. The most important projects, such as the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh or the skyscraper for the Spanish gas company Gas Natural in Barcelona, were only completed after his death.
Enric Miralles died at the age of 45 from complications from a brain tumor.
architecture
The architectural language of Enric Miralles is difficult to classify in its independence in the currents of contemporary architecture. It is inspired by Spanish architects such as Alejandro de la Sota , Josep Antoni Coderch and Josep Maria Jujol , but also by international greats such as Le Corbusier , Louis Kahn and Alvar Aalto or the constructivism of the 1920s. The freely formed buildings made of solid building materials and steel arise from the relationship to the environment and connect with it. The design and the - often unusual - materials with their largely natural surfaces are shaping. Form and material interpret the place, its traditions and the history found in a personal and poetic way, as critics have attested. Starting with urban planning or the landscape, he aimed to design a building in its entirety, right down to the furnishings and the outdoor facilities. The execution of the details was just as important as the large shape. Both were developed from a large number of drawings, which - in addition to numerous models - were the main tools of the design work and stand independently next to the buildings in their quality.
Teaching
Enric Miralles worked as a teacher at numerous universities. In 1985 he became a professor at ETSAB in Barcelona, and in 1990 he took over the conceptual design class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main . In 1993 he received a call to Harvard , where he took over the Kenzō Tange chair. He has been visiting professor at Columbia University in New York , Princeton University in New Jersey , the Architectural Association in London , the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam , the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, and the colleges of Buenos Aires and Mexico City .
