Martin Adler

Martin John Lars Adler (born October 30, 1958 in Stockholm , † June 23, 2006 in Mogadishu , Somalia ) was a Swedish journalist and photographer .

Adler was born in Stockholm and grew up in Västerås . He reported on the world's trouble spots and had worked in many war zones, including El Salvador , Rwanda , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Angola , Sierra Leone , Liberia , Chechnya , Bosnia , Afghanistan , Sri Lanka , Kashmir , Burundi , Somalia , Sudan , Eritrea and Iraq . Adler was one of the few journalists who interviewed the Chechen underground fighter Shamil Basayev .

In 2001, Adler was awarded the Amnesty International Media Prize. This award he received for his report about the abduction and trafficking of Chinese women. He was also awarded the 2001 Silver Prize for Investigative Journalism at the New York TV Festival. In 2004 he received the Rory Peck Award for Hard News for On Patrol with Charlie Company in Iraq.

Martin Adler was murdered on June 23, 2006 by an unknown perpetrator during a demonstration in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. Adler was 47 years old and left behind his wife and two daughters.
