Ruth Kark , Hebrew: רות קרק (born March 28, 1941 in Petach Tikwa ) is an Israeli historian and professor of geography .

Life

Ruth Kark grew up as the daughter of Avraham and Shoshana (Motchan) Kleiner in Israel . Between 1958 and 1960 she completed her 21-month army service in the rank of non-commissioned officer. She then studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed her bachelor's degree in 1964 . In 1972 she finished her Master of Arts with cum laude and then completed her doctorate in historical geography by 1977 with a thesis on the development of the cities of Jerusalem and Jaffa from 1840 to the First World War .

Ruth Kark is married to Jeremy David Kark and has three grown children.

academic career

Since 1988 Ruth Kark has taught as a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Kark has written and published more than 20 books and over 250 articles on the history and historical geography of Palestine and Israel. Her academic interests are in the study of land use concepts and patterns in the Middle East and Palestine / Israel in the 19th and 20th centuries, urban and rural settlement processes as well as western civilizations, ideologies, interests, activities and interactions with the local population in the Holy Land .

Kark was a fellow at various universities and had various research stays, e. B. at the universities of Oxford , Harvard and Stanford .

Recently, Ruth Kark has written about women and land ownership in traditional and modern cultures. Her studies focus on global indigenous and Bedouin land rights, women and gender, and Jewish entrepreneurship of the Sephardim and Mizrahim in Palestine / Israel.

Kark is often appointed to court in Israel as an expert on land disputes.

Awards

Ruth Kark is a Yakirat Yerushalyim (Honorary Citizen of Jerusalem) and has received many awards, including the Heral Prize and the Israel Geographers' Association Science Prize .
