Ruth Worsley

Ruth Worsley (* 1962 in Hampton , Middlesex ) is a British Anglican theologian . She has been Suffragan Bishop of Taunton in the Diocese of Bath and Wells since September 2015 .

Life

Ruth Elizabeth Worsley grew up in Ashford and Staines on the approach path to Heathrow Airport . She studied English Literature , Theology and Biblical Theology ( Biblical Studies ) at the University of Manchester . While training as a nurse at Tameside General Hospital in the 1980s, she felt a desire to work in the religious field. She worked as a lay priestess ( Lay Minister ) and took on honorary and voluntary tasks in the pastoral work of her community. After her family moved to Nottingham in the 1990s, she began her MA in Church Service (MA in Mission and Ministry). Later she worked as a chaplain ( Chaplain ) for spouses and families of students at St John's Theological College in Nottingham.

In preparation for her own priesthood, she also attended St John's College in Nottingham, a theological college of the Anglican Church, in 1995. In September 1996 she was ordained a deacon . In 1997 she was ordained a priest . Their priests career began as a vicar ( Curate ) in Nottingham in the municipality Hyson Green in charge of the church in Forest Fields. In 2001 she became a pastor there ( priest in charge ).

From 2006 to 2008 she was Area Dean in North Nottingham. In 2008 she became part-time District Dean of Nottingham South and took a half -time priest in charge at St Christopher's Church in Sneinton , responsible for St Philip's Congregation. As district dean, she was responsible for some of the poorest neighborhoods and communities in Nottingham. From 2007 to 2010 she was Dean of the Women's Ministry in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and Honorary Canon at Southwell Minster . In 2009 she was made Honorary Chaplain to the Queen (HCQ) to the Queen; however, she later gave up this office with her appointment as bishop.

In 2010 she took over the office of "Parish Development Officer" for the Woolwich district in the Diocese of Southwark, based in Bermondsey . In February 2013 she became Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a parish) of Wiltshire in the Diocese of Salisbury. She gave up this office with her appointment as bishop.

On June 30, 2015, her appointment as Suffragan Bishop of Taunton in the Diocese of Bath and Wells was announced. She succeeded Peter Maurice , who had held the office since 2006 and retired on April 30, 2015. She was consecrated bishop on September 29, 2015 by Justin Welby , Archbishop of Canterbury , during a service at St Paul's Cathedral in London . On October 3, 2015, she was officially inducted into her office as bishop at Wells Cathedral . Her first act as suffragan bishop of Taunton was the appointment and confirmation of nine lay priests ( Lay Readers ).

Private

Ruth Worsley is married. Her husband, Howard Worsley, is also a pastor in the Church of England. They have three children together: Nathanael, Jonathan and Benjamin. Her hobbies include outdoor activities such as walking and sailing , reading (especially novels), playing the saxophone, and singing .
