Southwell is a town in the English county of Nottinghamshire . Southwell has been the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham of the Church of England since 1884 .

Today's urban area was already inhabited in Roman times. During excavations, the remains of a Roman villa were found.

The end of the Civil War in England began with the capture of King Charles I at Southwell by Scottish troops.

Southwell Minster

The Southwell Minster is known as a well-preserved church from Norman times. The previous building was an Anglo-Saxon church . This was replaced in the 12th century by the Romanesque western part of today's church. This construction phase was finished around 1130. From 1234 the eastern part of the church, the choir, was added in the Gothic style. At the end of the 13th century, the octagonal chapter house where the meetings of the clergy of the diocese took place was built. He is known for the stone carvings, the Leaves of Southwell , which are interpreted as early representations of the characters from the Robin Hood legend . The leaf capitals in the chapter house of the cathedral are so reminiscent of those in Naumburg Cathedral that they could have come from a student of the Naumburg master. After destruction in the English Civil War and a fire, the building was extensively restored in the 19th century and has served as a cathedral since 1884 .
