São Sebastião is a city and a district (município) in the state of São Paulo in Brazil Located on the Atlantic coast in the vicinity of the town of Caraguatatuba , the town had an estimated 88,980 inhabitants in 2019.
Economy and port
São Sebastião has a sea port and is located opposite the island of Ilhabela , which is a popular destination for residents of the capital of the state of São Paulo because of its beauty . For this reason, the tourism industry is very important in the São Sebastião district. The island is approached by a ferry service and is three kilometers away from the mainland. Not only the island of Ilhabela, but also the beaches of São Sebastião on the mainland are very popular destinations. Beaches like Guaecá, Toque-Toque, Maresias , Boiçucanga, Barra do Sahy are considered mecca for surfers on the coast. Today Maresias is practically the Ipanema of the Paulistas . That is why this region also has one of the best tourist infrastructures in Brazil.
The São Sebastião seaport mainly handles tankers delivering petroleum and fuel for Petrobras refineries to the nearby metropolitan areas of São Paulo and Santos via pipelines.
history
São Sebastião is one of the oldest places on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo . Before colonization, indigenous people from the Tupinambás and Tupiniquins tribe lived in this region . The surrounding mountains of the Serra de Boiçucanga were a natural dividing line for these peoples.
After the occupation of the land by the conquerors, a lot of sugar cane was grown in this region . This brought greater importance and wealth to the city of São Sebastião.

The district of São Sebastião is delimited in the north by Caraguatatuba in the east by the Atlantic Ocean and in the south by the district of Bertioga . In the western hinterland lies the Salesópolis district .
