The southern carnation owl ( Hadena magnolii ), also known as the carnation capsule owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 26 to 35 millimeters. The basic color of the upper side of the forewings varies from olive gray to reddish brown. Inner and outer transverse lines are whitish and strongly jagged. The circular, dark ring flaw that is bordered in white is very noticeable. The slightly less pronounced kidney defect is also outlined in white. The middle field is sometimes darkened, the white wavy line strongly jagged and delimited inwards with a few black arrow spots. The outer edge is alternately brown and white piebald. The upper side of the hind wing is a single color, light gray-brown, slightly darker towards the outside and shows an indistinct central spot. The females are equipped with a short, pointed ovipositor .

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are white-gray, yellow-gray or pale light brown in color. They have dark back and side back lines dissolved into large spots as well as other small, black, point-like spots.

Doll

The red-brown doll has two very short curved tips on the cremaster .

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from North Africa across the Iberian Peninsula through southern Europe to the Middle East and Central Asia. The northern border of this area runs through southern France , Switzerland over the southwest of Baden-Württemberg , through Austria and the Carpathian countries to the Ukraine and neighboring southern Russia . In the Alps it occurs up to an altitude of about 1500 meters. The southern carnation owl is found predominantly on limestone soils and prefers sunny, warm slopes, stony wasteland and rocky valleys.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal and fly in one generation per year from May to June. They sometimes suckle the flowers of ciliate herbs ( Silene ) during the day and visit artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars live from July to August. They feed on the seed pods, flowers and leaves of nodding catchfly ( Silene nutans ) or white carnation ( Silene latifolia ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

In Germany, the southern carnation owl has been found very sporadically in Baden-Württemberg, where it is classified in Category 2 (“critically endangered”) on the Red List of Endangered Species .

Systematics and taxonomy

The genus Hadena is divided into several sub-genera by Hacker (1992; 1996). Hadena magnolii belongs to the subgenus Hadena .
