The southern shrub chirp ( Fieberiella florii ) is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).

features

The cicadas are 6.5–8 mm long. Their bodies and forewings are covered with dark spots. The cicadas have a characteristic pattern on the wing tips.

Occurrence

The species was originally only found in the western Palearctic . It occurs in Central, South and Southeast Europe. The species was introduced to the British Isles. Its distribution area extends in the east to the Caucasus , the Middle East and Central Asia . Furthermore, the species has established itself as a neozoon in North America (USA and Canada).

Way of life

The southern shrub chirp can be found on various laurel plants , in particular privet and real laurel , as well as on rose plants (fruit trees such as cherry, plum, peach, apricot and apple). The cicadas suckle on the leaves and stems of these plants. The adults of a generation fly from June to October.

Harmful effect

The cicada species has been identified as a carrier of various bacterial strains ( Candidatus Phytoplasma ). These are responsible for plant diseases on fruit trees, including apples and cherries. Thus, the cicada species is considered a pest .

etymology

The suffix florii probably refers to the entomologist Gustav Flor (1829-1883).
