The Pacific Community (Engl. Pacific Community ; double. Communauté du Pacifique ) is an international organization with the objective of social and economic development of its Member States through expert and advisory activities.
history
It was founded on February 6, 1947 as the South Pacific Commission by Australia , France , the Netherlands , New Zealand , the United Kingdom and the United States , making it one of the oldest regional organizations in the world. The founding agreement is known as the Canberra Agreement .
The organization was given its current name in 1997. In its appearance, it mostly uses the term Secretariat of the Pacific Community in order to maintain continuity in the use of the abbreviation SPC , which originally stood for South Pacific Commission ; however, the secretariat is only part of the organization.
The headquarters of the Pacific Community are in Nouméa , New Caledonia ; the education center and agriculture and forestry program are based in Suva , Fiji . The current General Manager is Jimmie Rogers of the Solomon Islands .
Members
The Pacific Community currently has 26 members. These are the 22 Pacific island states and territories as well as the four founding states Australia , France , New Zealand and the United States . The United Kingdom was a brief interruption (1996 to 1998) Member until 2005. In November, the accession of East Timor planned.
