The locomotives of the class С (German transcription S) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge electric locomotives . They were first referred to as the С10 series (S10). Two locomotives of the series were converted to СМ (SM).

Series С (S)

As the first long-distance railway line in the Soviet Union , the Chaschuri - Sestaponi section of the Poti – Baku line of the Transcaucasian Railway in the Georgian SSR was electrified in order to cope with the increasing transport services over the Surami Pass . The electrification was carried out with 3000 volts direct current . In the absence of experience with the construction of electric locomotives, the procurement of locomotives for this route abroad was planned. For this purpose, offers were obtained from the manufacturers AEG and Siemens-Schuckert (both Germany ) as well as Metropolitan Vickers ( United Kingdom ), General Electric ( USA ) and Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri ( Italy ). General Electric was awarded the contract for eight and Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri for seven locomotives.

General Electric was selected as the supplier because they had previously supplied locomotives with six driving axles, engines with an output of 340 kilowatts and regenerative brakes to Brazil for a comparable area of application . The first two locomotives were delivered in June 1932, they were based in Chaschuri and were given the numbers С10-01 and -03. The series designation was derived from the area of application and stands for "Сурамский" (Suramski).

With the series С10, the typical appearance of Soviet electric locomotives was introduced well into the 1950s. Characteristic is the front circuit, where headlights and sockets are attached, and access to the driver's cab from the front. Three-axle bogies were used according to the intended use.

After the electrification of the line had been completed in the summer of 1932, test drives were carried out on August 2nd. On August 16, electrical operation was opened with С10-03. At the end of 1932, the remaining six С10s were delivered, but unlike the first two without engines. The import of electric locomotives was supposed to be a temporary solution, the aim was to build them locally. For this purpose, it was agreed with General Electric to take over the construction plans. The first replica was made in 1932, the locomotive was given the number С С 11-01 (S S 11-01; the series was later referred to as С С (S S )). The replica engines of the type ДПЭ-340 (DPE-340) built in the Moscow plant in Dinamo also had an output of 340 kilowatts. These motors were also installed in the six non-powered C10s.

For electrical operation, the use of the locomotives in multiple units was planned from the start. After the series С И 10 (S I 10), later С И (S I ) supplied by Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri , was available in 1933, attempts were made with С И 10-10. Since these were successful, all locomotives of the series С, С С and С И were equipped for multiple traction, but a mixed use of the series was not possible.

In 1934, the electric locomotives took the sole operation on the Surami Pass, 17 in this case replaced electric locomotives 42 steam locomotives of the series Э .

In the 1930s the designation of the С10 series was changed, the addition “10” was omitted, the final series designation was thus “С”.

Series СМ (SM)

The successor series С С was modernized from 1952. С-01 and -02 were also included in this modernization, they were given the numbers СМ-01 and -02. Here, engines of the type ДПЭ-400А (DPE-400A) were installed, as it was also used for the series ВЛ22М , the electrical structure was adapted to these locomotives, but without the installation of a regenerative brake. The top speed was increased to up to 80 km / h.

Both the modernized and non-modernized locomotives were retired in 1973, none of the С series locomotives remained.
