The SŽD series ЭО ( translit. EO ) is an SŽD locomotive designed for 3 kV DC voltage for freight and passenger traffic . The abbreviation ЭО stands for the initials of Э лектровоз О пытный ("electric locomotive trial"). Originally the locomotive was designated as Г1 ("G1"). The locomotives were delivered from the German LEW Hennigsdorf plant in 1959 . The construction of the locomotives was similar to that of the PKP series EU04 and PKP series EU05 .
history
The Г1 series electric locomotives arrived in the USSR on December 31, 1959 at the Brest border station . On January 10, 1960, they were transferred to the Moscow - Sortirovochnoj depot . The designation of the series soon changed from Г1 to ЭО to avoid confusion with the gas turbine locomotive Г1 . After testing, the locomotives pulled trains on the Moscow – Ryazan and Moscow – Yaroslavl lines . In 1961 a fire broke out in a locomotive on a journey (the inventory number of the locomotive is not known), and the affected locomotive had to be retired that same year. The remaining electric locomotive was then given to a metallurgy combine in Chelyabinsk for factory traffic on the industrial tracks. The further fate of the locomotive is not known.
In the accumulation of experience with their operation, the locomotives turned out to be not equal to other locomotives in both freight and passenger train service. In freight train service they were inferior to the SŽD series ВЛ23 in terms of pulling power (the ЭО had an hourly pulling power of 232 kN compared to the 264 kN of the ВЛ23 ), not to mention the ВЛ8 . In passenger traffic, the locomotive had no chance against the SZD series ЧС2 of Škoda . The speed in the hourly performance regime was at ЭО (49 km / h), at ЧС2 (72.4 km / h)
For this reason, the SŽD did not reorder the locomotive.
